The causes of Fibromyalgia as yet are unknown, some studies point towards a genetic condition, whilst others suggest stress as being a causative factor.

Regardless of what the medical community identify as being the causes, the condition leaves sufferers feeling depressed, irritable and frustrated due to the lack of physical signs, making it difficult for others to understand the cause of their pain.

“Living With Fibromyalgia, The Complete Guide to Prevention and Treatment” by Anton Weeding, provides an essential guide for both sufferers and those wishing to obtain more information on the condition. Members of his family have suffered from this debilitating condition and he hopes to help readers and their families.

He says ” Maintaining a positive attitude, being patient and following the medical and exercise regimens can be very difficult because of the fatigue and pain”

This book offers vital guidance and support.

Owing to his personal experiences, he is able to give a more detailed overview of the condition and not use medical terminology, which in some books adds to the frustration of the reader. He sets out in plain english:

Causes
Types
Signs and Symptoms
Risk Factors
Who gets Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia in Children
Upto Date Research
Myths and Facts surrounding Fibromyalgia

The book also covers why more women suffer from Fibromyalgia then men, also how it effects pregnancy and menopause.

Areas in which the medical community are not fully aware of, for instance, Fibromyalgia is commonly wrongly diagnosed as Arthritis. Although the treatment may give sufferers short term relief, it does not eliminate the condition long term.

Conditions with similar symptoms are explored and tips on how to eliminate those conditions.

Some readers will benefit from the self diagnosis content, along with advice on who and when to seek help.

Alternative treatments are covered, natural remedies to acupuncture, along with dietary therapy for Fibromyalgia.

My favourite tip from the guide, laughter, it reliefs tension. So simple, yet such a powerful therapy, it is so easy to withdraw into a shell and brood about the effects of the condition.

Although the book does not offer a cure, it provides invaluable advice on dealing with the symptoms, following the tips will go a long way to reducing the effects of Fibromyalgia.

Self help for fibromyalgia is out there and available. First off, let’s start by defining fibromyalgia. Following a simplified line of thought, we can say that fibromyalgia is best characterized by chronic pain that is felt in the muscles, ligaments and tendons.

The condition itself is related to arthritis and was once thought of as a psychological problem since laboratory tests found no indication that there was something wrong with individuals who had the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

However, later studies have verified the existence of the condition. The fact of the matter is it was only 14 years ago when the American College of Rheumatology recognized fibromyalgia and legitimized it as a human disorder.

Recent statistics indicate that fibromyalgia affects between 3 – 5 million of the U.S. population. Diagnosing the condition is now a formalized process. People who exhibit a history of widespread pain on both sides of the body in the upper and lower areas of the waist for at least three months, as well as pain in at least 11 of 18 specified tender-point areas are most likely suffering from fibromyalgia.

Modern medicine has already found ways of treating fibromyalgia, although there is currently no specific FDA approved fibromyalgia medication. However, there are drugs that are prescribed to relieve the pain. Such drugs include aspirin, ibuprofen and other pain relievers. Antidepressants are also commonly prescribed to help relieve depression and may also help with sleep disorders that often come with having fibromyalgia. Doctors also recommend muscle relaxants such as cyclobenzaprine among others.

However, the best treatment plan doesn’t involve drugs alone. It is actually a combination of exercise, medicine, physical therapy and relaxation that helps individuals with fibromyalgia to overcome the condition.

A study that was carried out on 84 fibromyalgia sufferers, where half the group where given normal medications and the other half followed a self-help program instead. This involved swimming, exercise, relaxation techniques and small modifications in diet.

The self-help group reported the most positive benefits, feeling less fatigue, depression and anxiety alone with added boost of more energy. The first group who followed the medical treatments reported no difference in their condition at the end of the trial.

So, to introduce self-help methods to your treatment plan try low-impact aerobic exercises such as walking and swimming. Interestingly, strength training has also shown to be helpful in treating fibromyalgia patients.

These types of exercises increase muscle and overall body flexibility and strength. These also help relieve pain and can help patients sleep. Plus, doctors have successfully tested that heat and massage offer short-term relief from pain and muscle stiffness. The key, however, is moderation. Just like normal exercises, the body cannot take too much of something. With this in mind, it is important to work closely with your doctor to determine the type of exercises and how much you should do.

Aside from regular exercises, there are a number of natural and self-care techniques that patients with fibromyalgia can observe for faster recovery.
For more natural methods of treating Fibromyalgia and other self-care tips sign up for the free Fibromyalgia newsletter below.

Patients with fibromyalgia should learn to reduce stress in their everyday life. This stress can be either overexertion from day to day activities, or emotional stress from family or personal life. It is vital that patients learn to relax and take it easy. The more stressed they become, the more their condition will worsen. Deep-breathing exercises or meditation can be very effective means to manage or control your stress.

Another option you might consider is to avoid fatigue. Rest whenever you feel fatigued and make sure that you get sufficient sleep everyday. However, you should limit your daytime naps, and set up a regular go-to-sleep ritual that relaxes you and helps you prepare for a good night’s sleep.

The study also included dietary changes and you’ve no doubt heard often about the importance of a healthy diet, and it has never been truer than with fibromyalgia. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and other nutritious foods. Drink plenty of water and stay away from processed, fast or fried foods. Also now is the time to give up smoking and possibly also alcohol. Live a healthy life and go out and play and feel happy, satisfied and fulfilled. Having a positive predisposition in life also has an effect on your health.

Self help for fibromyalgia is very much available, and accessible if you start putting some of these simple steps into practice.

Don’t be confused when you hear the term fibromyalgia chronic fatigue syndrome, as this does not describe an actual medical condition. What we have are two different conditions: fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

These two medical conditions have baffled the medical community for quite a while now. It took them years to establish and release official guidelines for the two syndrome’s diagnosis.

Both FMS and CFS are non-fatal conditions. And because the conditions do not damage any body tissue, no permanent physical effects have been observed from people who had the syndromes. Nevertheless, the damaging effects might not be present in the body itself, but rather the conditions can greatly affect relationships in families, with friends and employers.

Most evident and most immediately affected by these syndromes are job performance and family relations. This is why it is very important that patients have a solid support group to help them cope with the hardships they will have to face as they treat their conditions.

Fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS is usually categorized by the pain patients feel in their muscles, particularly in the areas like the back of your head, neck, upper chest, elbows, hips and knees. The pain usually needs to be consistent for at least three months before fibromyalgia is considered as the cause.

Also there other symptoms that accompany the disorder which helps doctors distinguish the syndrome from CFS or from other related disorders or diseases for that matter. Aside from the chronic pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, feelings of extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, depression and anxiety are some of the other symptoms of FMS.

While people diagnosed with CFS have symptoms like muscle weakness, digestive disturbances, loss of brain function, hypersensitivity, orthostatic intolerance (the body has an abnormal reactions when standing up), depression, immune system weakness, and even cardiac and respiratory problems. But these are just accompanying conditions and the most prominent symptom of a person with CFS is fatigue. Fatigue can vary from mild to severe; however, these instances of feeling exhaustion can occur in unexpected situations.

For example, patients that have possible CFS will feel exhausted quickly even if he/she is doing very simple, normal activities. Some doctors or experts insists that before the patient is officially diagnosed as having CFS, the condition of fatigue and tiredness be present for a period of six consecutive months. Also, the fatigue felt by patients should not be associated with other medical conditions or disease like cancer.

However, although these are two separate conditions there appears to be quite a significant overlap between them and it is thought they may make up part of a wider spectrum of similar conditions. Your diagnosis of either fibromyalgia or CFS may depend on which symptom presents itself first.

They are both similar conditions to arthritis where the symptoms can come and go and also vary in severity.

If you are interested in finding out more about Fibromyalgia and how to combat it naturally then sign up for the free newsletter below.

Many of the treatment options for both fibromyalgia chronic fatigue syndrome are similar, which stands to reason given the symptoms are also very similar.

Fibromyalgia can be a pretty overwhelming condition. The wide spread muscular pain can make ordinary tasks like getting up and into the shower or preparing a meal and doing the washing up a real struggle. The experience may be a physical one, but fibromyalgia can also take its toll on the emotional and psychological aspects of life. This is where attending a fibromyalgia support group can be really useful.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is experienced by many people nowadays, characterized by muscle and joint pain and accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, migraines, trouble concentrating (brain fog) and even irritable bowel syndrome. This condition has been around for a long time, but it was only in 1990 that the medical community officially recognized it.

Currently there is no cure for fibromyalgia or even a FDA approved treatment specifically designed to tackle it. Once a diagnosis is given the approach by most doctors is to seek medication that combats the pain and relieves symptoms rather than trying to cure it. This is why it becomes important to seek additional help and information elsewhere.

Joining a Fibromyalgia Support Group

Considering the debilitating effect fibromyalgia can have on an individual, its not surprising that it can lead to other health issues. Being constantly in pain and feeling fatigued and sleep deprived can lead to depression and anxiety. Because even the smallest tasks can become huge mountains to climb it can often feel easier to stay at home and give up outside interests and work.

Cutting yourself off from the rest of the world is never a good idea so joining a fibromyalgia support group can be a good option for you to regain a foothold back into the real world.

Fibromyalgia support groups are often provided by private organizations. You will also most likely find one in your community organized by groups of people also suffering with fibromyalgia.

You can ask local health clinics for referrals or check online for forums and community sites that provide support to fibromyalgia sufferers if you don’t feel up to getting out and about. It’s possible to form some really strong friendships online, where location and nationality don’t matter.

Continue reading for the benefits of joining a support group and to sign up for the free fibromyalgia newsletter focusing on treating symptoms naturally.

A fibromyalgia support group of any kind can be a big help. Belonging to a group allows you to communicate with others going through the same experiences as you. It gives you the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on treatments or even to let off a little steam on the challenging days. Not everything has to be about fibromyalgia either. Online forums usually have sections for other types of discussions, whether it’s hobbies, jokes or just general chat.

You’ll be amazed at what you learn from belonging to a support group. The other people are going through the same thing as you and will all have tried different approaches to treating their symptoms. There’s a great opportunity to share tips on pain management options that worked and also discover the ones that haven’t been as successful. If you are feeling depressed or anxious, this kind of community atmosphere can provide hope and encouragement and you’ll find that most people are really helpful and sympathetic.

Its great to read about or share in the success stories of those who effectively manage or overcome their symptoms and can act as a real inspiration. You can see how they worked their way out of the pain by improving on the other aspects of their mind and body.

Conclusion

One great way to cope with what this condition is doing to your life is to join a fibromyalgia support group to help you cope and manage this situation. This is can be really effective way to helping you regain the life that you deserve.

Have you been feeling widespread pain and aching joints? Do you sometimes feel so tired that just thinking about doing something is exhausting? Have you been feeling like this for a couple of months already? If you’re answering yes to these questions, you might be suffering from fibromyalgia. And if your doctor confirms that indeed you have fibromyalgia, flax seed oil, along with a healthy diet can help you combat the condition.

Overview of Fibromyalgia

The first step in overcoming the condition is learning all about it. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is characterized by widespread pain, tenderness and soreness in ligaments, joints and tendons, muscle aches, ever-present fatigue and sleeping disorders. Sometimes, people with this disease cannot even perform ordinary tasks for any prolonged period of time.

Fibromyalgia, a condition that generally effects people as they get older with the average age sitting at around 45. It effects many more women than men and around 3 to 6% of the American population are suffering from it. The cause of this chronic syndrome is still unknown, and treatment is usually directed at alleviating pain and overcoming stress and sleeping problems.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

As mentioned earlier, painful joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments are the number one symptoms of this illness. Pain is usually more acute in some points in the neck, hips, back, legs and arms. Usually, fibromyalgia sufferers find it difficult to have a restful sleep, that is why they feel so tired all the time. Some also experience depression, migraine, jaw aches, and even poor memory and concentration.

Components of Flax Seed Oil

In the past, flax seed oil has been used in many things, such as textile manufacturing and painting, but not as a food ingredient or supplement. However, experts have discovered that flax seed oil is a good source of Alpha Linolenic-Acid, an important component of Omega 3. The body then converts this into prostaglandins, which help to relieve inflammation associated with fibromylgia.

Keep reading for more benefits about flax seeds and to sign up for the free fibromyalgia newsletter that has many more suggestions for natural ways to relieve symptoms.

They have also discovered that flax seed oil contains other essential fatty acids, such as Omega 6 and Omega 9. These fatty acids are considered essential because they are the major components of our cell membranes. Moreover, our body cannot manufacture these essential fatty acids. We need to include these fatty acids in the food we eat so that we do not develop a deficiency.

Aside from Omega 3, flax seed oil is also a good source of lignan, which is an effective anti-oxidant. Lignans can be found in animals and plants. Flax seed is one of the best sources of lignans among plants. This chemical compound is effective in boosting energy and in helping strengthen the immune system.

Role of Flax Seed Oil in Helping With Fibromyalgia

Since there is currently no known cure for fibromyalgia, the best approach is to manage the symptoms. This is where the flax seed oil comes in as it targets the inflammation of your joints and tendons and helps lessen swelling and soreness.

For people who have fibromyalgia flax seed oil can be added to your diet everyday to help minimize inflammation. You can take it directly, or use the oil as salad dressing.

Are you afflicted by fibromyalgia? Or are you worried about someone that is afflicted by fibromyalgia? Yes, the explanation for your worry is genuine as until date the doctors haven’t been ready to prescribe a single medication which can give complete relief from all the indicators of fibromyalgia. They prescribe different drugs for the different symptoms like body discomfort, sleep disorder, loss of appetite, stomach agony, allergy and so on.

This does not mean the patient has to gulp down a fistful of medication everyday to get relief from fibromyalgia syndrome. Successive research and study is happening and it’s been noted that diet habits play a significant role in providing relief from this syndrome.

What should be the diet for Fibromyalgia? It is terribly hard to make a fixed diet chart which can be adopted by all fibromyalgia patients. But it’s been noted that there are certain food elements which have a difficult effect on the body and if those food items are eliminated from the diet the patient can get maximum relief. The intake of sugar should be reduced, particularly sugar that’s found in juices and cold drinks.

If juice is taken it’s far better to take fresh juice made at home or that juice should be taken which is sugar free and natural that is without any chemicals. Coffee or tea should be absolutely evaded as it’ll affect the sleep and increase sleep disorder that may irritate the problem. If you feel that there’s utmost need for coffee then you may have it in the morning but never take it in the evening or before going to bed. It’s a smart move to understand about the allergic condition of your body. If you have food allergy duck that food. How are you going to know that you are allergic to which food?

Doctors have found that grains, meats, dairy products, nuts and eggs are common allergens. So stop taking these products and see the result. Then introduce these food items one at a time in your diet and find out which item is worsening the issue. This way you’ll be able to know that you are allergic to which food item.

Do not stuff your meal with carbohydrates. It may provide energy but won’t provide all the nutrients needed by the body. Protein should also be added to the diet. Intake of alcohol should be fully stopped as alcohol has effects on the nervous system which increases the issue. Likewise alcohol will create sleep rumpus that will again give rise to other issues. Also try and avoid synthetic sweeteners.

Oftentimes, when fibromyalgia is diagnosed, people are prescribed medications to treat pain and other symptoms associated with the disorder. But recent studies have shown that there may be a fibromyalgia high blood pressure link and certain medications may even put a patient at risk.

Serotonin, fibromyalgia and high blood pressure

Serotonins are neuro-transmitters that pass on messages from one cell to the next via synapses. In the central nervous system, serotonin affects memory, mood and sensations of pain. A condition called Serotonin Syndrome is characterized by increased serotonin levels in the body.

For people who have fibromyalgia, serotonin syndrome can become a problem. Some of the newer and most promising treatments for fibromyalgia are serotonin-based medications. These medications provide relief from pain and muscle stiffness but they can also elevate the levels of serotonin in the body. As a result, fibromyalgia patients can feel dizzy, restless, confused, uncoordinated, sweaty and anxious.

If left untreated, this syndrome can lead to complications including high blood pressure. If allowed to progress, high blood pressure as a result of fibromyalgia medication can be life-threatening and lead to seizures and strokes.

High blood pressure as a result of fibromyalgia

In a recent study conducted by the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin, it was found that fibromyalgia increases the risk developing metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome brings with it a host of risk factors that include stroke and high blood pressure.

In the study that involved 109 women who have fibromyalgia, it was found that they were 5.5 times more likely to develop metabolic risks than women who were healthy are. They also tended to have higher body mass index, LDL cholesterol levels, glycosylated hemoglobin and yes, high blood pressure.

Changing the way we treat fibromyalgia

The American Heart Association recently made a statement regarding the use of certain drugs to treat chronic pain, including those associated with fibromyalgia. According to the statement, the AHA advises doctors to use treatments that are non-pharmacologic as a first line of defense against fibromyalgia. Only when this approach fails should doctors consider medications to provide relief but only in a ’stepped-care’ approach. The AHA believes that chronic pain, including fibromyalgia pain, can be overcome without the need to expose patients to risks such as heart problems and high blood pressure.

Due to the side effects of certain medications, fibromyalgia is often inadvertently linked to high blood pressure. Because of the accompanying risks involved, patients must work closely with their doctors to find the proper medications that can treat their disorder and still keep the negative risks low. Patients should be aware of the fibromyalgia high blood pressure connection so they know what to expect and to see their doctor immediately if a negative reaction is experienced.

What did you say? You aren’t feeling well. Why what has happened? Are you down with fever? No, then what’s the matter? You are afflicted by body discomfort. From when are you afflicted by body pain? Do you have any other symptoms? Yes, you are afflicted by body agony for the last a quarter. According to your outline it appears to be fibromyalgia.

Together with that you are feeling sleepy, discomfort in the joints and ligaments, sleep disorder, and lassitude isn’t it? Then it’s better that you right away consult a doctor and find out the reason for the agony.

It’s a syndrome which mostly is affecting middle aged ladies but it’s been revealed that men and kids also suffer from this illness. What’s the reason for fibromyalgia? Till date the precise reason for this illness hasn’t been found. A lot of believe it’s a neurological problem, some say it is caused due to some trauma or shock which one experiences at some stage of life and some believe it’s a viral attack.

Whatever might be the cause it’s correct that you aren’t in a position to lead the standard life like before as the agony is hampering your capability to do the daily work. But there’s nada to worry, go to the doctor as fast as possible. Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia What have you heard, that diagnosis of fibromyalgia isn’t possible? Yes it’s right that it is really not easy to diagnose fibromyalgia. Did you know why?

Because fibromyalgia is a syndrome which mimics the indicators of plenty of illnesses so just hearing about the issues the doctor won’t be able to choose what the particular ailment is. So when the doctor will start diagnosing he’ll look for all the other considerations so that the chance of having any other illness can be eliminated and a last call can be taken. When you visit the doctor don’t forget to inform him all the issues you are facing. It’s miles better to notice down in a secure place as you could have noted that some times you forget things.

Plenty of research and studies is happening about this illness and the Yank University of Rheumatology has prepared some rules to help the Consultants to diagnose the illness. According to them there are eighteen tender points in the body out of that the patient should feel discomfort in at least eleven points when pressure is applied to those places. The discomfort in the body should endure for a quarter. But all the doctors don’t follow it strictly.

Is it true that if you are diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome follows? Well, these two conditions are classed as separate disorders but there does appear to be an overlap between the two.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder, with the pain symptom being widespread musculoskeletal pain and the presence of multiple tender points. There are 18 specific tender points and doctors will usually look for the patient to express pain for at least 11 when pressed using mild force. , They can be found in the areas near the neck, spine, shoulders, hips, knees and elbows. Fibromyalgia patients also exhibit a myriad of other symptoms, with the most common being sleep disorders, morning stiffness, fatigue, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, depression and anxiety.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is also a chronic disorder, which is also known as chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). People with CFS feel a persistent fatigue that does not improve with rest. They will feel tired immediately even if they were just doing ordinary and normal activities. They can feel exhausted for no apparent reason and be housebound or bed-bound for long periods of time.

Studies have indicated that about 80 percent of patients diagnosed with CFS were observed to have an overlapping diagnosis of fibromyalgia. There is some speculation that because of this close relationship fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are actually part of a wider spectrum of disorders and therefore are linked.

When treating fibromyalgia, doctors and experts recommend having a holistic approach. Treatment programs for fibromyalgia are not piece-meal processes. Everyone involved should be an active player. The patients, the doctors, the therapists, and the family and friends should play active roles in the treatment programs. The support group of patients with fibromyalgia should be as strong as their will power will need to be to recover from their condition.

There are a number of treatment programs that patients can adopt that reduce symptoms. For one, low impact aerobic exercises have shown to have positive impacts, with fibromyalgia patients reporting reduced pain and improved sleep. These exercises include swimming and walking both of which targets the muscles making them more fit which reduces muscle pain and tenderness. Exercise also releases certain hormones and chemicals that can block pain receptors and boost the immune system.

Other forms of treatment for fibromyalgia include heat and massage therapies. These help to increase the blood flow to the muscles to encourage healing. Medications are also available and include painkillers, antidepressant medications for elevating moods, sleep drugs and muscle relaxants. However the best results seem to come from patients who use a combination of medication, exercise, diet modifications, physical therapy, and meditation and relaxation in their fibromyalgia treatment programs.

Treating chronic fatigue syndrome uses similar methods to the fibromyalgia treatments. It has been observed that patients with the condition are also more likely to improve their condition if they use an integrated treatment approach in their programs.

As symptoms and severity can vary so much from patient to patient, doctors will normally try to address the worse symptoms first. There are medicines that can target sleeping problems, cognitive difficulties and pain, however CFS patients are often sensitive to these so dosages are normally lowered.

Herbal treatments are an option and although your doctor won’t prescribe these, anecdotally CFS sufferers have experienced significant improvements.

You should be aware however, that herbal treatments can inter-react with other medicines and you should seek medical advice before taking anything.

Amending your diet to remove caffeine, refined sugar, and alcohol is also recommended as many CFS sufferers report sensitivities to these products. If you smoke you should try and give up, if not for your lungs, but because it can make symptoms worse.

Some patients have found relief through alternative treatments like gentle massage, acupuncture and mediation. If you wish to try an alternative treatment method try to find a practitioner who has experience of CFS.

Just like fibromyalgia, medications alone don’t normally succeed in alleviating all the CFS symptoms. By combining conventional medicines with treatments like meditation or relaxation, stress management, emotional and mental health counseling, and sleep management both fibromyalgia chronic fatigue syndrome can be better managed.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, widespread, debilitating disease that often manifests as diffuse pain, constant muscle aches and overwhelming fatigue. Although it affects about 2-6% of the general population (about five million people), fibromyalgia is not a contagious disease. Women are about 9 times more likely to be diagnosed than men, and it is most prevalent in prevalent in people between 20-50 years of age.

Fibromyalgia usually displays a variety of symptoms including generalized aches and pains, increased sensitivity of the skin, chronic fatigue, weakness or dizziness, muscle stiffness or joint pain and migraine headaches. Symptoms of fibromyalgia vary greatly between individuals but almost all suffer from an associated sleep disorder. Depression, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, numbness and tingling of the extremities and heightened sensitivity to stimuli may also be present.

Currently, there is no known specific cause of fibromyalgia. Popular opinion suggests a disorder in pain perception and processing in the pathways to the brain. Research has shown that fibromyalgia patients have elevated levels of substance P (involved with enhanced pain perception) and a lower than normal production of natural stress hormones.

Another theory revolves around a sleep disturbance as the cause, because many fibromyalgia patients cannot attain deep sleep. Still other theories have implicated reduced immune system function, environmental toxins, abnormal hormonal fluctuations, viral causes, genetic links and dysfunctional neurotransmitters. Although exciting new research is constantly being done, the cause of fibromyalgia remains elusive and has the medical world stumped.

Diagnosis of fibromyalgia is based on a specific set of criteria, including a physical examination or observation, and the symptoms described by the patient. Ruling out other possible diseases is key.

Currently, there are no conclusive laboratory tests to identify fibromyalgia but for diagnostic purposes, there has to be a history of diffuse pain lasting longer than three months. Another diagnostic requirement is the presence of at least 11 “tender points” out of a possible 18 and these are typically located at elbow and knee joints, the neck, shoulders, lower back and hips… Individual cases of fibromyalgia have a wide variability, but many patients also suffer from other disorders as well.

These comorbid syndromes commonly include chronic clinical depression, lyme disease, chronic fatigue sydrome, premenstrual syndrome, restless legs syndrome, spinal disorders, or hypothyroidism. There are also many factors that can aggravate fibromyalgia. Severe weather changes, nutritional deficiencies, over-exertion, increases in stress levels, allergies and cold weather have all been shown to contribute to flare-ups. Treatment of fibromyalgia has historically been inadequate at best.

There is no cure for the disease and therapies are usually aimed at alleviating the symptoms and improving quality of sleep. Medications commonly prescribed for fibromyalgia include conventional analgesics, low-dose antidepressants, muscle relaxants and sleep-inducing agents. Alternative therapies that have shown some promise include acupuncture, chiropractic care, physical therapy, meditation or relaxation techniques and a gentle aerobic exercise program. Other important considerations to prevent fibromyalgia from flaring up include a regular sleep routine, emotional and physical stress reduction, good social support networks and strategies to conserve energy and minimize triggering factors.

Fibromyalgia can be a very difficult disease to live with because of its chronic, disabling nature and the presence of widespread skepticism. There is often no objective evidence of physical illness and the disease is very poorly understood. Sufferers of fibromyalgia face accusations of laziness or feigning illness. Social activity and recreation is often be avoided and the patient’s career is usually affected as well. Although fibromyalgia can affect every aspect of its victims’ lives, it does not have to be as devastating as it once was. With advanced scientific research and promising new treatments waiting in the wings, anything’s possible.
